September 2008

Brother Knights,

Well, summer’s winding down…the kids are back to school…soon the leaves will change color and fall.  Next thing you know, we’ll be looking toward the holidays.  Oftentimes we ask “Where does the time go?”

Let’s never forget that despite the hurried pace of our lives, that our families come first.  The upcoming months give us a chance to celebrate and grow closer. Here are a few suggestions:

-October is the month of the Rosary-plan to pray the Rosary together as a family at least weekly;

-Celebrate Halloween the way it originated-the eve of the Feast of ALL SAINTS! Have a Council costume party with everyone dressed up as their favorite Saint;

-As Election Day nears, remember to get out and vote, and work to elect candidates who pledge to stand up for the sanctity of marriage and family;

-Start preparing for Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas-look in the “Surge With Service” book and the Supreme Council website for ideas to celebrate these holidays as a family-pass on your holiday traditions to your children!

May this fall be a season of love, laughter, and togetherness for you and your families.

Fraternally,

Chris Myers

It’s Membership Time in Tennessee!!!!!

Summertime is filled with kids, vacations and plenty of hot weather.  Did you also know the majority of all moving is done in the months of June, July and August?  That’s right; most relocation is completed in the summer to accommodate our children school changes.  This also means that new members are coming to your parishes.  Now is the time to develop your membership plans for the next fraternal year. Supreme has provided us with a fantastic new guide to make even the newest Council Membership Director successful!  These guides were sent to each District Deputy and Grand Knight in late June.  If you didn’t get one or need another, we have added this guide to the Tennessee State K of C website.

Please take advantage of this tool that will walk you through step by step how to evaluate your councils to identify strengths and weaknesses, where to find new potential members and how to keep them.

Now is the time to set your degree schedule in your council and districts.  Plan regular First Degree’s so that your members can tell prospects when their next opportunity to join will be.  It is much easier to cancel a degree than to set one up at the last minute.  Also, make it a priority to have the candidates sponsor pick up and take the candidate to each degree.  Did you realize that we lose 20-25% of all candidates that have signed a FORM 100?  They never make it to the First Degree; many simply go to the wrong place or have the wrong time. They understandably get frustrated and never come back.  Show your newest members-to-be that you care and you support their decision to join the Knights of Columbus. Sponsors should understand that a responsibility comes with signing up a new member.

Let’s get planning and have a great recruiting year!

Vivat Jesus,

Steve Dietz
