COLUMBIAN SQUIRES
Squire:  According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary the first definition is “shield bearer or armor bearer of a Knight”.  Squires were normally Knights in Training.  Squires did a lot of things to fulfill the needs of a Knight.  They polished, they repaired, they took care of the Knights horse, and in the event the Knight was captured, he was responsible for rescuing him.  The Knight was responsible for bringing up the young man. He provided a home.  He educated the Squire on the ways of the world.

Squires today are our young men.  There are several ways that Knights help in bringing up young men; the Cub/Boy Scouts, CYO, Teen life and my favorite, the Columbian Squires.  These boys are the future of our Order.  Without young Squires to follow in the footsteps of the Knights who guide them, recruitment for your councils will be that much more difficult – especially in getting young members who we so desperately need.

The Supreme Council wants a council in every parish.  They also want a Squires Circle in every Council.  What is required?  Ten boys age 10-18 years old, a minimum of 2 committed adult Knights cleared by Supreme to work with young people, and a place to meet.  That is it.

I am more than willing to help in any way needed.  Please feel free to contact me at (615) 944-7943 or mark_mayer@comcast.net .  I will be at all the kick-off meetings in June and July to answer questions and help you get started.

Esto Dignus (Be Worthy)---the Squires motto.
